ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the research trends on Korean speaking for academic purposes and to suggest a research direction for this area of the studies in the future. For these purposes, we selected 113 previous studies on Korean speaking competence for academic purposes including the master and doctoral dissertations and the academic journals from the year 2003 to 2020 which are available in the RISS system. Afterwards we analyzed them by various categories such as a year, a research subject, a discourse pattern and a research method and finally by the Word Cloud program. Based on the analysis result by year, there are only a few studies conducted on Korean speaking for academic purposes until now. However it also shows a constant increase in recent years and this trend is expected to continue steadily in the future. The analysis results by research subjects showed it was the education methods that the majority of studies focused on as the main research subject. According to the analysis results by discourse patterns, most of the studies selected the presentation and the discussion pattern respectively as the main discourse patterns to discuss. The analysis result by research methods showed that the studies in the academic journals mainly adapted the research study method and whereas the dissertations adapted the teaching material analysis as the main research method. The result of using the Word Cloud program visually presents that both the dissertations and the studies in the academic journals were all focused on the curriculum development focusing on the presentations and the discussions. These above mentioned analysis results suggest that the future studies on Korean speaking for academic purposes should be diversified in discussing various discourse patterns and also verify the effectiveness of the current education methods. In conclusion, this study identified the up-to-date research trends and suggest the direction for future studies on Korean speaking for academic purposes.
