ABSTRACT

Hansung University has been seeking the harmony between liberal arts education centered on core competencies and the traditional liberal arts education. <Life and Dreams> is a liberal arts course developed in 2017 to assist freshman students' self-awareness and career design in accordance with the introduction of the “track system” where students are instructed to choose two tracks, or sub-disciplines as their majors. This course mainly aims to cultivate Community Competencies, which is composed of sub-competencies such as self-management competencies and interpersonal competencies. It also, however, contributes to the improvement of other key competencies like creative convergence competencies and global competencies. Since its inception, some complaints have risen concerning the large deviation between classes and the vagueness of their objectives. In response to these problems, a book, titled 『Life and Dreams』, was developed in September 2019 and has been utilized as the common textbook for the course so far. This study aims to introduce the way <Life and Dreams> has been utilized with a variety of performative class activities. Lastly, this paper also tries to prove the effectiveness of the course by means of the analysis of the results of the class survey conducted at the end of the semester. Through this, it was confirmed that most of the students who took the class perceived that their community competencies were improved as a result of the class.
