ABSTRACT

In this study, we investigated how learners perceive small group cooperative learning in language-related liberal arts courses. The research aimed to explore strategies for the effective implementation of small group cooperative learning in university liberal arts courses. To achieve this, a survey was conducted among 98 students who enrolled in two liberal arts courses related to language offered in the first semester of 2023 at a local four-year university. The results indicated that the majority of learners prefer small group cooperative learning and positively evaluate its educational effect. Specifically, students recognized the advantages of small group cooperative learning, including the expansion of their thinking through diverse exchanges of ideas with peers and the formation of a sense of bonding with fellow learners. Therefore, this study proposes measures to enhance the effective implementation of small group cooperative learning in university liberal arts courses. These measures include fostering motivation, providing ample ice-breaking activities for tension relief, and strengthening the functionality of peer evaluation. This will contribute to the improvement of learners' communication and collaboration skills.
