ABSTRACT

This study is to identify the current status of general education and suggest development directions by conducting a survey of 371 students at A University which has multiple campuses in Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces. In order to investigate the satisfaction and needs of general education, the researchers analyzed satisfaction with the organization and operation of general education and teaching and learning methods, contributions to core competencies, perception of the relationship between general education and major education, and needs for improvement of general education through descriptive statistical analyses and mean difference tests. As a result, students showed the highest satisfaction with the teaching and learning method, and the lowest satisfaction with the reflection of students' opinions when organizing the curriculum. There were significant differences among majors in their perceptions of the contribution of general education to fostering core competencies. Significant differences were also found in the perception of the relationship between general education and major education. The analysis of the needs for improvement of general education indicated that students' needs are not reflected in the curriculum of general education. This study is valuable in that it confirms the need for students to connect their majors with general education and suggests differences in the connection between majors and general education.
