ABSTRACT

This study explores the effectiveness of the Multicultural Travel and Global Citizenship course on college students’ cultural diversity competency. Additionally, it examines whether gender difference exists in the students’ cultural diversity competency. For this purpose, a pre-and post-online Cultural Diversity Competency Scale, validated by Park et al. (2023), was administered to H University students taking the “Multicultural Travel and Global Citizenship” course in the fall semester of 2022 and 2023. The analyses showed that cognitive competency showed the highest score, followed by Practical competency and then Sensitivity Competency both before and after the course over the two semesters. Additionally, creative convergence competency, a related indicator, was the highest competency after cognitive competency. After one semester of course experience, learners improved competency in the following order: cognitive > creative convergence > practice > sensitivity. In addition, there was an overall improvement in cultural diversity and creative convergence competency, a related indicator, irrespective of students’ gender. However, there were cases where affective competency, “sensitivity” decreased, although it was not statistically significant. There were no gender differences. As cultural diversity competency and its related indicator of convergent competence have improved overall, it can be said that the objectives of the curriculum have been achieved. In this sense, this study showed that the course met the course objectives. The researchers conjectured that to further enhance college students’ diversity competency specifically in affective dimension, it is important to expand and revitalize various extracurricular programs along with the regular course activities. 이 논문은 2024년 3월 20일까지 투고 완료되어 2024년 3월 26일부터 2024년 4월 9일까지 심사위원이 심사하고 2024년 4월 17일 심사위원 및 편집위원 회의에서 게재 결정된 논문임.
