ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine university students' perceptions and attitudes toward science and technology and to explore the significance of Science and Technology Studies (STS) education. Focusing on a liberal arts course titled "Exploration of the Academic World II" at a university in Korea, the research employs a mixed-methods approach. By measuring changes in students' awareness, perceptions, and attitudes toward science and technology before and after taking the class, and conducting in-depth interviews, the study provides insights into the impact of the class. The findings indicate that the "Exploration of the Academic World II" significantly enhanced students' holistic understanding of science and technology and fostered critical thinking within socio-technical contexts. Moreover, through the course, students came to recognize that science and technology do not influence society in a one-directional manner, but rather engage in complex, context-dependent interactions that call for critical reflection. Based on these insights, the study draws implications for designing STS education that enables students to actively and autonomously construct and apply knowledge regarding the societal meanings and roles of science and technology.
