AB - In this study, the gender representation patterns and their meanings in romance fantasy Web Novel were examined. When constructing the worldview of romance fantasy, the writer specifically reflects discrimination in reality, and female characters confront the existing gender perception of society.
In romance fantasy Web Novel, male characters contribute to the portrayal of gender-discriminatory discourse against women. They construct a discourse about men while concurrently engaging in the repeated discourse about women. When a woman becomes the focus of discourse about men, she discusses the ideal man.
Moreover, marriage is portrayed as a gateway for female characters to overcome adversity. In this process, female characters question the male-centered nature of family names and assert their identity through the recognition of these names as their own. Finally, female characters challenge societal norms and occupations traditionally deemed male-centric. At this juncture, their success narrative challenges the gender traditionally linked to the profession, prompting a redefinition of gender roles.
In other words, romance fantasy web novels still predominantly follow a heterosexual narrative, focusing on 'women/men', while also addressing discourse on various genders. This study shows the necessity of considering the various gender characters in the work and their discourse in the narrative of romance fantasy Web Novel.
