AB - The purpose of this study is to analyze the narrative changes in the adaptation of web novels to TV dramas, and to examine what should be considered for effective adaptation of web novels to other genres.
To this end, the case of the adaptation of the web novel Tomorrow's #1 to the TV drama Lovely Runner was analyzed, and the following formal changes were confirmed as a result. First, while web novels targeting a group of enthusiastic readers are faithful to clichés, TV dramas targeting a wider audience pursue universal plots, so the romance fantasy regression motif of this web novel is ‘refocused’ on the master plot of love in this TV drama. Second, in this adaptation, the traditional master plot of rescue is introduced to supplement the insufficient parts of the original rescue narrative and increase dramatic interest, thereby ‘re-accentuating’ the realization of a mutual salvation narrative. Third, the original work deeply deals with the dark side of fandom culture, so it is difficult to expand the audience's response in an adaptation targeting a non-maniac audience, so the idol motif story frame is maintained while the fandom narrative is purified and ‘softened.’ The significance of this study lies in revealing, through examples, that new genre conventions are always applied in the formal change process of refocusing, re-accentuating, and softening, and thus, in order to effectively adapt web novels to other genres, the problem of ‘what’ related to conventions must be considered in advance.
