ABSTRACT

The popular webtoon <Mask Girl> has been reborn as an original Netflix drama. The story, which unfolded over about 130 episodes, was converted into a 7 episode 'OTT drama', and the character changed. This is due to the phenomenon that adaptation is inevitably involved when webtoons are produced as movies or dramas. Therefore, this study analyzes the character adaptation strategy taken by the webtoon <Mask Girl> to be produced as an OTT drama <Mask Girl>. Webtoons induce emotional immersion through the imagination of readers and aim for free interpretation and consumption. OTT dramas present storytelling with a public consensus centered on the creator's intention. Amid these differences, previous studies point out that while matching the original characters, adaptations should be made with a mind that allows viewers to easily immerse themselves. The characters in the webtoon <Mask Girl>, Protagonist Mo-mi and Antagonist Kyung-ja, and Chun-ae, the sub-character connecting the two, are low in popularity and immersion. They are all depicted as murderous women, but it is difficult to find a justification for their murder. In the case of Mo-mi, the murders and crimes she commits without justifiable reasons are not purified or glorified but are delivered to the readers as they are. Kyung-ja appears as the most abnormal character among abnormal characters, adding to the tension, and the war of nerves between Mo-mi and Chun-ae is depicted as a battle between villains who had similar pain but chose to check and be jealous. The OTT drama <Mask Girl> maintains their basic settings and that they are murderous women, but has expanded the depth of favorability and empathy through adaptations. Viewers can easily follow the characters' narratives than the original ones, and it has become easier to accept Mo-mi as a protagonist. In the process, the functions and message of murder have changed, but it seems to be an essential change to transform webtoons into OTT dramas.
