AB - This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of Myeong-eun, a character in the film The Hill of Secrets, which deals with the story of a character growing through writing, through Foucault’s theory of self-care, and to clarify the literary educational significance of a character who practices self-care. The characteristics of the act of writing or the existence of a writer are in line with the inherent desire for self-understanding and self-expression of humans. Since literary education aims for a broad understanding of humans and the world, the character type of writing is a useful educational material. At this time, Foucault’s theory of self-care is suitable for analyzing the aspect of the ‘a human being who writes’ in the film because it considers writing as an important means.
After a theoretical review in Chapter 2, Myeong-eun’s self-care aspects are analyzed in Chapter 3, and the literary educational significance of a character who practices self-care is proposed in Chapter 4. First, Myeong-eun adopts writing as a method of self-care to hide or express secrets about her family, and in the process, she reaches self-discovery. Myeong-eun experiences another aspect of self-care, which is forming relationships with others, through exchanging letters with her homeroom teacher, Ae-ran, and confessing her shame. Through the encounter with Hye-jin, who causes a rift in Myeong-eun's existing world, she realizes self-care that performs the functions of criticism and struggle from the position of a ‘A human being who reads’. Next, the literary educational significance of characters who show self-care like Myeong-eun was discussed with a focus on competency. These are self-determination competency, communication competency, and critical thinking competency. Self-determination competency, which can be cultivated through writing an autobiography, refers to the ability to decide one's own way of life. Communication competency, which involves writing in the form of letters, is the ability to relate to others with a genuine attitude, based on self-care. Critical thinking competency, which involves reflecting on oneself through the writing of others, means actively recognizing external stimuli and acquiring a subjective perspective.
The character type of ‘a human being who writes’ faithfully expresses desires through writing, and practices establishing relationships with oneself and forming relationships with others, which are the core of self-care. Self-care through writing is a way of life that is in line with the universal principles necessary for human growth, and therefore, works featuring characters who demonstrate self-care have literary educational value.
