ABSTRACT

“The Reality of Korean Married Couples and Novels” (total 20 installments), serialized in the Chosun Ilbo in 1963, was a newspaper project designed to read and evaluate family issues through the narrative lens of fiction. By juxtaposing Korean literary works with practical sources such as legal consultations, Written Judgment, statistical data, news reports on cases, and the series presented marital conflicts not merely as personal experiences but as matters to be socially assessed and interpreted. This paper analyzes how this serialization method invoked novels as normative references for interpreting and evaluating marital relationships, thereby concretizing the abstract rights and duties prescribed by family law into the ethics of everyday life. In particular, the series repositions novels—from Yeom Sang-seop to works spanning the colonial period to the early 1960s—as benchmarks for judging the realities of 1963, thereby actualizing the temporal order of literary history in a distinctive way. Through this analysis, the study seeks to elucidate how early 1960s newspaper media, mediated through literary narratives, organized and reconstructed marital norms following the enforcement of family law.
