AB - This paper gives explanation to Lee Byeong-gi’s theory of Sijo reformation as literary campaign of Hangul on 1920~30’s, and reveals it’s strategic foundation. After 1933’s legislation of unified korean spelling system, writers―including Lee―took on the duty to set up a specific plan for korean literary language through their works. Lee’s works are under the sense of responsibility on making direction guidance to modern korean writings, especially poetry.
Lee’s continual research on classics was for finding the norm of korean writing. He wanted to extract Hangul’s potentials as literary language by studying existing classical writings. Therefore he found Sijo, the existing form of Hangul poem, and this discovery led his study to making a new standard of Hangul poem based on the traditional Sijo style.
In that context, Lee insisted the Theory of Sijo reformation, and this theory emphasized embracing modern experiences and language of modern life. Lee considered Sijo as a standard form of Hangul poem, and made an effort for settling down modern Sijo on modern literaure as a new norm of Hangul poetry. And to conclude, his logical strategies are for making Sijo as the most suitable form of korean lyric poetry.
