AB - This study aims to examine the characteristics of the classic textbooks that have used since 2015 in the high school throughout the country. The writer analyzed the contents of three different authorized classic textbooks.
These authorized classic textbooks include the publishing company’s individuality that has the pros and cons. The common thing of these books is that the oriental classical works consist of contents focusing on the literature and humanities, to the exclusion of classical works about science, social studies and arts. And it feels the lack of introducing the classic of Japanese which has exchanged frequently.
To analyze the individual characteristics, the classic textbook published by Kyohaksa has suggested the whole unit’s aim and learning objectives without the middle size of units. It has the strength to include the various learning activities that could make the most of classical works’ characteristics.
The classic textbook published by Chunjae is very systematic and consists of the differentiated activities comparing to other textbooks. It suggests the necessity of teaching classic and includes the whole area of the systematic content in ‘classic’ textbook like literature, humanities, science, social studies and arts. Also, it has three parts of understanding, researching and communicating in each unit, besides the strength that the table of contents is very systematic to utilize variously according to each school’s level and circumstances.
The classic textbook published by Haenaem-edu fails to include suitably the contents of middle and small units in the title of whole unit. Because the learning objectives are suggested equally, despite the differentiation of middle and small unit, it is not easy to set the goal and make the detailed division. However it has the strength that the classic textbook has the function of integrating with other subjects, because it concentrates on the various performance activities. And it lightens teaching and learning burden by the simple learning activities comparatively.
It is very important to choose the right classic textbook according to each school’s circumstances and students’ level in order to succeed in teaching and learning classic of schools. The more important thing is the cooperative preparation between the teacher and students. Teaching classic class can descend to just only reading comprehension of classical literature, without the efforts and practice for the learning objective emphasized on classic subject.
