ABSTRACT

This study has a purpose to analyze the narrative structure of The Mom’s stake by Park Wanseo, and to investigate the meaning of this work. Especially this study focus on aspects the course of female character’s growth and the formation of heroine’s identity. The Mom’s stake is composed of three short stories, but these converge one narrative and meaning. To analyze deep structure and subject of this series novel, this study regards the key words as delayed growth, overlapped flashback, and lasting end. The delayed growth, overlapped flashback structure assume the commanding and strategic role of formation of the heroine’s identity. The course of formation of the heroine’s identity is different from the hero’s. So far many researchers have pointed out the difference between the two case. The lasting end structure shows that the problematic situations will not end after the work is finished, so the identity of female character will not be established. The theme of The Mom’s stake coincides with the narrative structure. In particular, the lasting end structure expresses the deeper meaning of the “stake”. The meaning of “stake” is binding and origin. These two corresponds to the feeling of ambivalence about her mother. In other words, the female character feels contradiction, and this is the meaning of “stake”. Conclusively, in this work the “stake” is “mom”.
