ABSTRACT

This study examines absence and existence which are interrelated with a tragic view of the world seen in poems by Kim, Jong-sam, expression of and response to pain, and innocence of characters. He creates aesthetic imagination in order to respond the meaningless and pain of life. It is the power that enables the endurance of present pain and the feature of transcendence that affects the present. The world of absence and existence make tragic balance through the life where perfection and imperfection are interdependent. He maximizes pain, through which he overcome the meaningless of life and convert the pain into the power of creation. The poetic form that reveals absence is effective in showing irresistible destiny imposed on humans and tragic sentiments. Characters in poems are disconnected from present conditions by death, maladjustment and passivity. The passivity of characters proves and maintains purity by blocking the inflow of comparison clause and change. By refraining from representing reality as it is, he shows the absolute appearance of the world which can be shown when reality is required.
