ABSTRACT

This study is an author's theory of Gong Ji-young. The paper aims to explore the religious character of Gong Ji-young and her works, the essay “The Journey to the monastery” and the novel “The High and Blue Ladder.” For Gong, “The Journey to the monastery” is not a story about the place on earth but a journey of souls. The genre of this book is not just a travel essay but a religious award book. This book shows the path of the soul to God. The three characteristics of the book are writing ‘spirituality’ instead of ‘reason’, believing in ‘woman’ instead of ‘man’, and talking between man and God. The author cited the philosophy of modern theologians from the medieval delivery. And Gong discovers herself in the course of writing during her journey to the European monastery, which she called ‘The Journey of the Soul.’ Then, from a young age, the author's question of “why?” looks for an answer in the form of a novel. The novel “The High and Blue Ladder” is a growing story of a monk. The author describes the monastery as an epic space through the novel's background, the Benedict Abbey in Waegwan. The novel features three investigations and compares the various paths to God. And deals with the forbidden love of the main character, John. The epic structure of this work shows the dichotomy of love. Here, there is a conflict between love for God, the vertical axis, and human love, which is the horizontal axis. The ladder in the title is a Christian symbol. And in the process of pulling out Heungnam, the miracle of the ladder sets itself in the historical background of the work. This novel will give an example to our Christian literary history, which has no tradition of monastery literature.
