ABSTRACT

Pyongyang is frequently portrayed as a place to recall history as a city of Gojoseon and Goguryeo in the poetry of the literary period of the Joseon Dynasty. However, the historical remains that people refer to are indeed unprovable or strongly mythical. It was at the time when Dangun was recognized as the founder of the country in earnest in the late Goryeo period, and it was at the time when the Ming Dynasty came and went to make a full effort to prove the existence of Gija. Although Tongmyeongwang was also the object of recognition during the Goryeo Dynasty where Koguryo succession ceremony was held, the romantic mythological color was added to the Joseon Dynasty, but the sacredness of the existent person disappeared and was treated as an interesting mythological figure. The reason for this is that the people who had a great influence in Pyongyang in the Joseon Dynasty were not the indigenous people but the Ming China envoys and a provincial governor that came from outside. Although it does not show the indigenous and concrete characteristics of Pyongyang, it was good to explain the history of Joseon, and Pyongyang could be an optimal place for tourism where history and folklore coexist. As a result, however, only the ideological memory remained in Pyongyang's historical relics. Unlike other cities which has concrete circumstances and historical remnants of history, Pyongyang has acquired an image as a symbolic historical space, conveying only abstract and ideological historical relics.
