ABSTRACT

Acknowledging the significant role of narrative in human cognition and responding to contemporary developments such as the rise of generative AI, this study seeks to reformulate narrative theory by drawing upon the achievements of cognitive science and neuroscience. The core methodology proposed is to establish a mapping function by correlating cognitive conceptual terms―such as schema, library, module, and processing―with narrative conceptual terms, ranging from subject matter (or themes) to discourse. Furthermore, it is appropriate to design methods like the narrative cog, the narrative mind-reading, and neuro-narrative therapy, while also presenting a blueprint for experimental models such as an AI interpretive community. Through this research I seek to expand the scope of narrative theory, establish the foundation for a methodological shift that allows for the analysis of the narrative communication processing from a scientific perspective, and open up new possibilities for narrative studies in conjunction with artificial intelligence.
