ABSTRACT

This paper aims to examine the way correspondence education developed during that era by focusing on guidebooks published by correspondence schools in modern Japan. This paper aimed to derive key issues that can approach the development of modern Japanese correspondence education by unearthing guidebooks from Waseda University and the Dai-Nippon Kokumin Chugakukai, which represent modern Japanese correspondence schools. First, this paper examined how correspondence schools of the time formed mutual reference relationships with other correspondence schools and put forward not only the uniformization and standardization of correspondence education but also its relativization and specialization as operational strategies. Second, it examined how correspondence schools of the time sought to adopt Western correspondence education and the latest teaching and learning methods, as well as the Ministry of Education's educational ordinances and the imperial familyism, as their educational ideology.
