AB - This thesis examined the significance of 『Donghaebukyurok(東海北遊錄)』 and travels in Gwanbuk(關北); and discussed the poetry world of travels in Gwanbuk, through 『Donghaebukyurok』 written by Donghae(東海) Jo Jong-jin(趙琮鎭) after he had traveled as a governor called Bukpyongsa(北評事).
Donghae, in a sense, decided to call his family as one of the political families in Gwanbuk by reason of a close connection between his’n and the local. And he realized the position of Bukpyongsa as a Joogwan(疇官), to be following in his ancestor’s footsteps, furthermore, embraced it as Chunghwan(淸宦), an honorable duty, even though it was lowly political position. So he expressed a sense of grave responsibility on his mission, traveling over Gwanbuk with expectancy not alone to arise ‘broad-minded(豪放)’ but also to grow it.
Donghae combined an international trade supervisor inspecting closely distribution of commerce, with an local instructor controlling education for the students of Confucianism, material for poetry, and the state examination, generally, inclusive of an aide of his superior, Byoungmajeoldosa(兵馬節度使). There by, Donghae could experience all of the real state of affairs in Gwanbuk, and record lots of facts in that region. Eventually, these factors were help him to write the 『Donghaebukyurok』.
Donghae’s 『Donghaebukyurok』 was created by taking a perspective that every word must contain the teachings of Confucianism(載道論的 文學觀), and by following two attitudes to writing of Confucius(孔子) and Sima Qian(司馬遷): the former was ‘Do not create anything but just write something(述而不作)’, the latter was ‘Write down all of facts just as they are(實錄)’. Donghae put some utilities to his book: one was personal utility, it means that 『Donghaebukyurok』could be useful as travel materials without first hand experience, the other was social utility, it means that 『Donghaebukyurok』could be utilized as any reference or guide book of Gwanbuk. That is, it should be the most significance of 『Donghaebukyurok』 that he tried to change some social perceptions which were to keep away from Gwanbuk and to treat the local people were others in those days, and induce to have more realistic point of view for Gwanbuk.
Donghae’s poetry of travels in Gwanbuk has four distinct features : succession of his family occupation and praise for historic spots of royal family, academic exchange and promotion of literature with the people in Gwanbuk, realistic description of actual the local people’s experiences, and, expression and growth of broad-minded by long distance travels.
