AB - An industrial accident means an injury, illness, disability, or death of an employee in the workplace. This study tries to examine the methods used when covering industrial accidents in the Korean Press. For research, the study compares the type of report and news frame utilized among five of the top mainstream daily newspapers. The study also looks into the difference of reporting industrial accidents between conservative and liberal channels. According to the research, the media generally reported industrial accidents in the society section with straight news articles. Coverage was significantly greater in newspapers by Hankyoreh Shinmun and Kyunghyang Shinmun than Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo, and Dong-a Ilbo. In terms of sources, family and workers were highlighted by Hankyoreh and Kyunghyang, and Chosun spotlighted corporations, as JoongAng and Dong-a published articles based on government and public agencies. Coverage was collectively greater on larger corporations including subcontractors and minimal for any domestic incidents involving foreigners. In the frame analysis, industrial accidents were most frequently framed with explanation and corporate responsibility. Chosun, JoongAng, Dong-a, and Kyunghyang utilized explanation while Hankyoreh leveraged corporate responsibility. In the case of the science and infrastructure, the coverage was minimal.
