Today, the adolescent problem, in many respects is related with the crisis of character education. Various indicators of the adolescent statistics announced in 2013 at National Statistical Office prove this point. Therefore, the need of character education is being raised more than ever before. Character education refers to inner nature that forms ethical character, quality, or strong will to cultivate moral character, and to make it expressed as good behavior. However, even if such character education is conducted at churches and schools, if the family home does not lead the way, it will surely fail. This is because a home is not a societal system created by human, rather it is a divine institution that God has raised himself. At the same time, God has also given the first Alpha mission(Genesis 1:27-28) where God carried out direct plan for us to achieve through a divine institution called family home.
The alpha mission the God gave the man for the first time emphasizes that the key to the success of character education lies at home. Family home is the basic place of education for human education. The God ordered two things through Moses to make the alpha mission be realized through home. First, He ordered Shema to parents (Deut. 6:4-9), and filial piety to children through the fifth commandment (Exod. 20:12) of the Ten Commandments. Shema emphasizes that parents have the first responsibility to provide their children with religious teaching, home worship, and time of contemplation. And, the fact that the God gave us the fifth commandment as the first ethical commandment we should observe in human relationship teaches us that what should be given the first priority in character education for children is filial piety education. Thus, this paper emphasizes biblical filial piety education and recovery of family worship to faith education in the home for character education.
With this thesis as a start, I hope for more continued research from various perspectives in order to strengthen education in faith within a family home, and through proposing practical tasks accordingly, I look forward to seeing much meaningful outcome related to character education.
