ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to study the coming-out experience of North Korean refugees through qualitative research. The researcher met six participants who were university students from North Korean refugees settled in South Korea. The researcher interviewed them in-depth more than three to four times, analyzed the collected data and derived the key topics by using generic qualitative research methods. As results, there were three aspects of the coming-out experience of North Korean refugees: coming-in, outing and coming-out, These aspects were shown in very diverse and complicated forms by time, even for a single person, and sometimes were appeared several of them simultaneously at one time depending on the situation. The coming-out experience of the participants in this research was a coping and survival strategy for their lives in South Korea, Based on these results, the researcher revealed the social meaning of these experiences and made practical suggestions.
