ABSTRACT

This paper examined how the Northeastern border of Silla dynasty changed over the passage of time. The northeastern border of Silla was near the Haseula(Gangneung City) from the late 3rd century to 390s. In 400 AD, Goguryeo dynasty advanced southwards and incorporated the East Sea coastal area of the Gyeongbuk Province and ruled it until 450s. In nearly 450 AD, Silla attacked Goguryeo, and advanced to the Haseula(Gangneung City). Silla continuously went to the north to the Anbyeon between 475 and 481 AD, but lost the Eastern coastal area in north of the Haseula by Goguryeo in 497 AD. After Silla occupied the Han river area in 550s, Silla took over the Biyeolseong Fortress(Anbyeon) to the eastern coast in 556 AD and advanced to the Hamheung and Iweon area. Silla lost the east coastal region of the north of Anbyeon in 608 by Goguryeo. Silla had it back in 612 but Goguryeo reoccupied it in 642 year. Silla conquered the Biyeolhol area(Anbyeon) on December of 666 and incorporated the Cheonjeon-gun into their territory. Balhae advanced to the Northeastern Korean province and confronted Silla with the border of the Cheonjeon-gun and Niha river in the early era of King Mu󰡑s reign. The Center of the Cheonjeon-gun was somewhere between the Geumya-eup and Goweon-eup, so Niha river is estimated to be located in the Yongheung river. Thereafter between the early 9th century to 886 AD, the Malgal tribes had advanced southwards gradually, and took the Cheonjeon-gun and Hyeons that was under control of the Cheonjeon-gun, confronted Silla with the border of the Anbyeon.
