ABSTRACT

The “Maeso Fortress” Battle(買肖城 戰鬪) has been known as the representative engagement during the war Period between Silla and T'ang(羅唐戰爭) and it led to the end of the war eventually because Silla(新羅) gave decisive damage against T'ang(唐). According to the theory of few referential theses, the theory of Taejon-village Mountain Fortress in Yonchon(漣川 大田里 山城) and the theory of Daemo Mountain Fortress in Yang-Ju(楊州 大母山城) has been considered as the most persuasive points of view generally, which are based on the same premise that The Maeso Fortress(買肖城) and The Maesochun Fortress(買蘇川城) are the identical location. Following hypotheses are set in the process of studying the premise after researching the reference articles in 『SamGuk-SaGi(三國史記)』 and archaeological cases, the expeditionary force's supplying issues after the post-harvest season, changes of the name of the region and etc. I concluded that the “Maeso Fortress” and the “Maesochun Fortress” are not the identical name of the location and the Maeso Fortress is the Daemo Mountain Fortress in Yang-Ju and the Maesochun Fortress is the Taejon-village Mountain Fortress in Yonchon. The process of the War between Silla and T'ang including The Maeso Fortress Battle in 675 could be summarized with overall analyses of articles related to the war in 675 on 『SamGuk-SaGi』 and 『JaChee-TongGam(資治通鑑)』. The War between Silla and T'ang in 675 is divided into two phases, the “Chiljung Fortress” Battle in Feb and the campaign(戰役) of Maeso Fortress in Sep. Silla was defeated in the first phase. However, Silla prepared well for the next phase. During The Cheon Fortress Battle(泉城 戰鬪), Silla defeated the T’ang’s fleet led by general Xue Ren-gui(薛仁貴) who had intended to conduct a landing operation and a supply mission for the troop of general Li Jin-xing(李謹行), which forced General Li Jin-xing to retreat. General Li Jin-xing rearranged his troops with T'ang's regular army and T'ang's barbarian forces and then he conducted several battles in northern part of the present Kyunggi-do(京畿道) and Kangwon-do(江原道). In spite of a certain outcome, they had to fall back due to the cold weather ending the campaign of Maeso Fortress. It seems The Maesochun Fortress Battle(買蘇川城 戰鬪) took place during the period and Wonsul(元述) took an main role in the battle. This study focused on the Maeso Fortress Battle and the interrelationship between battles during the War between Silla and T'ang in 675. The Maeso Fortress Battle had a great effect on contributing to finish the War between Silla and T'ang and rebuilding the international order of East Asia. The Maeso Fortress Battle has been considered as one of the great victory in Korean war history in that there had not been engagement, which could be compared with general SeoHee(徐熙)’s negotiation with the Kitan(契丹).
