ABSTRACT

Un'yō incident was one of Japan's main arguments in the Japan– Korea Treaty of 1876. For this reason, the so-called "Unyoho Incident" has been studied in Korea and Japan in many aspects, and the results have been accumulated. However, these studies have been utilized as a vehicle to examine the subsequent historical changes, such as the course of Japan-Korea relations, rather than the course of the incident itself. For this reason, the main debate on the Unyokham incident has also centered on Japan's intentions. Here, we review the unfolding events of the Unyōhama shelling in detail, separated by time period. In particular, the military aspects of the incident, such as ships and weapons, are analyzed, along with geographical factors, including maritime characteristics, such as tidal changes and flow rates, and the environment along the west coast where the incident took place. This detailed analysis of the military aspect of the event provides a detailed progression of how the bombardment of the Unyōshima unfolded.
