AB - In this article, we reviewed the activities of Japanese warships thatweredispatchedtoJoseonfromthe1870sto1880stomeasure the coast to produce a nautical chart and collect regional information duringreconnaissanceactivities.ThewarshipsnotedhereareKasga, Takaomaru, and Amagi, and the records related to the voyage to Joseon remain well. The Kasuga was a warship used by Hanabusa Yoshimoto when he was dispatched to Joseon to take over the Waegwan.AtthetimeofthedispatchoftheKasugatoJoseon,Hanabusa and crew members carried and used books related to the system, history, and geography of Joseon, charts produced by U.S. ships as reference materials. By the time the Joseon-Japan Treaty of Amityweresignedin1876afterthewarshipUnyoincidentin1875, an opinion raising the need to measure the coast of Joseon came out in Japan. The coastal survey was reflected in subsection 7 of the Joseon-Japan Treaty of Amity. Japanese warships dispatched to Joseon along with diplomatic envoys to explore the treaty ports after the opening of Joseon included Takaomaru and Amagi. The survey record was prepared as a chart, and information on the area wasaddedasthesurveyworkwasrepeatedovertheyears.Inaddition, someofthecontentsofthenavigationlogwereeditedandprocessed
