ABSTRACT

This research investigates documents associated with Jeseungdang on Hansando during the 18th and 19th centuries. The study examines the official records of the Tongjesa Jo Gyeong (趙儆), and other relevant documents to determine the reasons for the reconstruction of Jeseungdang. In addition, this research characterizes the facility through the examination of related records, and the 􋺷Jeseungdang Gopungrok􋺸 is analyzed to assess the visitors and the offerings they made. The findings are as follows. First, the reconstruction of Jeseungdang was part of an initiative to honor Admiral Yi Sun-sin (李舜臣) during the reign of King Yeongjo, subsequent to the martyrdom of his descendant, Yi Bong-sang (李鳳祥), in the Musinran(戊申亂). Cho Kyung of the Tongjesa and visited Hansando and rebuilt the Jesungdang, asking Cho Hyun-myung (趙顯命), who was associated with Musinran, to write a memo, and said that the purpose was to encourage loyalty to the people in the south. Second, visitors to the Tongjeyeong would frequently visit Jeseungdang and donate items while participating in naval training. They recognized Jeseungdangas an essential memorial space dedicated to Admiral Yi Sun-sin, where they would reflect on his legacy, reaffirm their loyalty and dedication to national defense, and sometimes practice archery. Lastly, the foundation of Jeseungdang of the Tongjesa Jo Gyeong resulted in the creation of the 􋺷Gopungrok􋺸, a document designed for the site’s upkeep and management, as well as regulating the acceptance of tributes from visitors. According to the 􋺷Jeseungdang Gopungrok,􋺸 these visitors included the Tongjesa, naval commanders, or local officials from nearby districts. These individuals honored Admiral Yi Sun-sin and used Jeseungdang as a space for commemoration and tribute.
