ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the formation environment and socio-cultural characteristics of recently coined new words. Recently, the environment for new word formation is changing because of the diversification of the speech community and the rapid evolution of meme culture. In addition, newly coined words contain the social and cultural characteristics of the times. Sociocultural characteristics that appear in recently coined new words include ‘universalization in our online lives’, ‘a vast spread of hate speech’, and ‘transition to self-oriented thinking’. In this study, I will examine the sociocultural characteristics of new words and find out what people are thinking these days.
