ABSTRACT

Schelling's exploration of the unconscious had a great influence on 19th-century romantic psychiatry. What is noteworthy at this time is that he explains the structure of the unconscious in a cosmic and ontological way beyond the level of individual psychology. Of course, Schelling did not initially intend to explore the unconscious itself from the perspective of psychotherapy. He inevitably moved to the realm of the unconscious in the systematic consideration of the issue of human freedom, which is the starting point and the whole of his philosophy. Then why and how are the issues of freedom and unconsciousness related to him? And how is the unconscious related to personality, the subject of freedom and responsibility? The paper has examined how Schelling moved toward reflection on the unconscious in his explanation of freedom, what is the relationship between the unconscious and personality, and how the structure of personality is explained from the level of divine being. This consideration eventually becomes the basis for the comparison of Schelling's and Freud's thoughts, in particular, the attempt to compare the two thoughts in terms of unconsciousness and personality, which this study aims to follow.
