The Life and Activities of Ahn Seok-kyung in Gangwon-do as Reflected in the Sapgyo Manrok - The Value of Pilgi (筆記) Writings in Humanities for the Study of Regional Korean Classical Literature -

This paper aims to examine the life and activities of Ahn Seok-kyung(1718-1774), who spent much of his life in Gangwon-do, in order to shed light on the history of Korean classical literature in Gangwon-do in the late Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), focusing on the Sapgyo Manrok (霅橋漫錄), a collection of his writings. Unlike previous studies of Korean classical literature in Gangwon-do, this research attempted to make a balanced survey by examining the community activities of writers living in the region. Ahn Seok-kyung, a migrant who settled in Sapgyo in Hoengseong by way of Wonju, demonstrated an open and sincere attitude toward communication with local residents, advised his student Gang Ip-ji to associate with true gentlemen and support one another while living away from home, advised him not to be swayed by the threat of bandits or tigers, and offered him practical wisdom of life. By recording the anecdotes of a Wonju boat merchant Yi, as well as the father of Lim Gyeong-won in Hoengseong, Ahn Seok-kyung demonstrated a literary intention to explore and embody the meaning of Dao (道) in daily life. Ahn, who engaged in scholarly discussions with Gang Ip-ji at the Yongyeon Academy in Hoengseong, sought ethical answers on the issues of entertaining guests and dealing with unethical teachers, focusing on the practice of Neo-Confucian doctrines in everyday life. Ahn actively attempted to promote Gangwon-do community figures by petitioning to elevate the posthumous rank of Gwon Gyu (權揆), a deceased Goseong scholar in Gangwon-do, as part of his effort to honor his talent and by persistently appealing to the provincial governor with regard to the issue of awarding a medal on the filial daughter-in-law Yi in Hoengseong. The Sapgyo Manrok vividly contains An’s experience of dynamically negotiating with Gangwon-do residents and the detailed scenes of life, thereby confirming the humanistic value of pilgi (筆記, a genre of notes and miscellaneous writings) in the study of regional Korean classical literature.

A Study on the Characteristics and the Meaning of Waunong Mungyeon Sugi

Waunong Mungyeon Sugi is a collection of miscellaneous writings written by Hong Ji-seop (1754-1822). The entire book is composed of: Hong Ji-seop’s Preface, 160 texts, 12 stories, and 19 appendices of Udeukgwan-gyeon. On the wing of the cover is Hong’s poem believed to have been written immediately after he was released from exile and returned home, and at the end of the book is a handwritten copy of the book written by his friend Sim No-seung after reading this book at the fall of 1816. Chapter 2 summarizes Hong’s family lineage and life, especially introducing a lot of data from his close friend Sim No-seung. This book shows that Hong Ji-seop, along with his father, Hong Byeong-seong, shared the party platform of the Soron Faction during the reign of King Jeongjo, and specifically belonged to the Jeong Dong-jun’s lineage instead. After King Jeongjo’s death, his political alignment shifted in line with the ups and downs of the Noron Faction. Of the 160 regulations of the main text in Chapter 3, Regulations 1 to 20 cover the anecdotes about Hong Ji-seop’s childhood teachers—the Yi Gwang-yun and Yi Gwang-ryeo brothers—and the following Regulation 12 focuses on Yi Gwang-yun’s younger brother. The record of private stories about the two teachers at the beginning and end of this book demonstrates the profound influence of the two masters on Hong Ji-seop’s intellectual development. Nineteen appendices of Udeukgwan-gyeon a re the lessons left to future generations. Chapter 4 reveals the significance of the text along with the content of Regulation 160 of the text. Its significance includes: first, the discovery of an unknown aspect of the Ganghwa School students; second, the anecdotes of Yi Gwang-ryeo; third, the records of the people who shared the political line of the faction during the reign of King Jeongjo; and fourth, the integrity and incorruptibility of the aristocrats and the rules for public duty and service.

Han Kang’s Construction of Lexicon and Creation of Interactive Media - With a Focus on The White Book and We Do Not Part -

This study quantitatively models the semantic relations between Han Kang's The White Book (Huin, 2016) and We Do Not Part (Jakbyeolhaji anneunda, 2021) and, by mapping how lexemes shared with The White Book are varied and expanded in We Do Not Part (2021), examines how the latter constructs the circuits of mourning and memory. It further examines how Han Kang's use of vocabulary in the two novels embodies what Lev Manovich calls “spatial montage” and “the logic of the database,” and seeks to reconstruct this nonlinearity through interactive media. The analysis proceeds in four steps. First, we cluster the corpora of the two works to compare lexical dispersion and cohesion; We Do Not Partexhibits clearer segmentation at the level of semantic fields while maintaining richer and more variegated vocabularies within each field. Second, assuming The White Book functions as a reservoir of primordial motifs in We Do Not Part, we identify and assess the lexicon shared between the two works, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Third, in order to show how We Do Not Part both inherits and extends the core imageries of The White Book, we select vocabulary unique to the novel and organize it into three thematic networks—“pit–lying down,” “wind–snow–rain,” and “light–candle–shadow”—using co-occurrence graphs to trace variation and expansion across scenes. Fourth, recognizing that key signifiers in We Do Not Part are dispersed across the text and invite transversal reading, we build a Twine-based interactive prototype that hyperlinks passages around the “thread–light–shadow–sea” constellation, foregrounding spatial montage and nonlinear navigation. Finally, the paper reads the sensory, image-producing body in We Do Not Part as prefigured in The White Book. On this p remise, it p ursues a “material” method: treating lexical units as measurable indicators that intersect with semantic strata to generate multi-layered meaning spaces. This approach exposes the structural dynamics by which Han's language organizes mourning, memory, and ethical attention.

Food, Body, and Mind from the Perspective of ‘Connection’

This paper defines food as a vital medium that connects humans, nature, and the universe from cultural, social, and philosophical perspectives, and analyzes the relationships between food and the body, and between food and the mind, from the viewpoint of humanistic “connection.” Humanity, both in the East and the West, has long recognized the importance of connection. Through a collaborative approach between the science of nutrition and philosophy, this paper explores the multidimensional influences of food on human life. Food provides essential nutrients for sustaining life and regulating bodily functions, revealing that the human body, constantly dependent on external substances, exists in a constant state of interconnection with the outside world. From a psychological perspective, food influences neurotransmitters and brain functions, and is therefore closely linked to emotional regulation, stress relief, cognitive performance, and sleep quality. Certain dietary patterns are even associated with the risk of depression and anxiety disorders. From a religious and cultural perspective, food serves as more than mere sustenance; it functions as a medium for faith, identity, and spiritual practice. Buddhist vegetarianism, Daoist concepts of qi regulation, and the idea of yishitongyuan (醫食同源, the unity of medicine and food) all emphasize the symbiotic relationship and interconnectedness among food, humans, and ultimately the universe. The discussion of connection extends broadly across society, influencing social inequality, health levels, and cultural identity. In conclusion, food is a key element that intimately links human life with the universe. Through the framework of humanistic connection theory, the complex network among food, body, and mind can be analyzed using the concepts of nodes and edges. Through this study, the paper underscores the fundamental insight that humans exist not in isolation from nature and the universe, but within an interconnected web of all beings. Furthermore, it cautions against anthropocentrism and proposes a practical direction toward a sustainable food culture and harmony between humans and nature.
