ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of flowers in Choi Doo-seok’s poems and to examine the pattern of their transformation. Choi’s poems largely evolved from “narrative poems” to “lyric poems” and “ecological poems.” The early poetry depicted groups of humans whose narratives were condensed to formalize flowers. Choi’s middle-period poetry was characterized by lyrical poetry that dealt with the aspect of communication between nature and humans, and the world of his late poetry expanded to reflect his inner consciousness in the form of ecological poetry. In this trend, the pictorial elements appearing in the poems are closely related to the poet’s career of producing photographs as a photographer. The world of Choi’s poetry is centered on the image of nature, where flowers specifically occupy a key position. The poet’s gaze, which produces purposefulness through nature and flowers without a purpose, turned toward beauty and ugliness. The poet’s realistic poetic strategy is to hold falsehood in check and pursue honesty, which is connected to Kant’s concept of natural beauty. The poet does not use natural objects as the objects of metaphor. Nature is described as a phenomenon because it has a fixed essence as the world of “being-in-itself,” as explained by Sartre. However, humans who resonate with stories are imperfect beings and embody meaning through unity with nature. The exploration of flowers that appeared in Choi’s poems will serve as an opportunity to rediscover the meaning of Korean realist poetry.
