ABSTRACT

‘The autumn moon shines on the cold river’ is a line from the tenth piece of Zhu Xi’s representative Confucian collection of poems, “The Inspirational Poems” (Ganxingshi, 感興詩). Chinese and Joseon commentaries commonly interpret that this verse is a sutra that was transmitted to each other by the sage scholars of the past. In particular, in terms of the transmission of Confucian orthodoxy (dàotǒng, 道統), the scholars of the Old Doctrine (Noron), especially Gwon Sang-ha, used ‘The autumn moon shines on the cold river’ as a way of identifying the origin of the lineage from Zhu Xi to Yi Yi, to be followed by Song Si-yeol and then Gwon Sang-ha, and the Southern Faction scholars used it as a way of identifying the transmission of the lineage from Zhu Xi to Yi Hwang. Yun Bong-gu, who belonged to the Horon group among the Old Doctrine scholars, used this phrase as a mind of a sage scholar in his writings advocating the restoration of the heavenly principle through overcoming temperaments. Yi Seo emphasized the image of water flowing through the paths of Susa, Yeomlak, and Toegye, while An Jeong-bok of the Sungho school paid attention to the clear nature of the river as an embodiment of heaven. In addition, the Southern Faction scholars in the Yeongnam regions paid more attention to the embodiment of heaven and understood this phrase in terms of Observation of Things. This article examines the various interpretations of ‘The autumn moon shines on the cold river’ and seeks to understand the concept of Neo-Confucianism in each school of thoughts during the Joseon Dynasty based on the concrete images rather than abstract ideas, and to find the point of contact between literature and thoughts.
