ABSTRACT

This paper examines the conceptual framework and methods underlying Nakae Tōjū’s understanding of the world and human nature, focusing on the concept of ‘Practical Learning of Bright Virtue and Compassion for the People,’ which forms the foundation of Tōjū’s scholarship and thoughts. Tōjū associated ‘Bright Virtue’ with the Supreme Emperor, defining ‘Bright Virtue’ as the inherent essence of humanity endowed by the Supreme Emperor. He described humans as beings that experience ‘the joy of life’ and characterized the world as a ‘paradise,’ pursuing ‘Supreme Bliss.’ The Supreme Bliss of the mind is attained through recognizing, serving, and offering reverence to the Supreme Emperor inherent in humanity. Tōjū embodied the practice of serving and revering the Supreme Emperor as the virtue of ‘filial piety’ and proposed the logic of ‘Restoring Harmony through Benevolence.’ In Tōjū’s philosophy, humans are regarded as beings endowed with the potential for enjoying infinite freedom. The ideas of ‘Revering the Mandate of Heaven’ and ‘Honoring Virtue,’ which Tōjū emphasized in connection with the Supreme Emperor, are the concepts applicable to all individuals. Both the self and others are positioned as the objects of ‘reverence’ and ‘honor.’ This approach by Tōjū can be interpreted as a practical discourse for coexistence. However, in premodern Japanese society, where hierarchical discrimination was prevalent, such an understanding could potentially function as a catalyst for social fluidity. On the other hand, the emphasis on ‘filial piety’ might also operate as a concept that reinforces the rigidity of social structures.
