ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the ways of converting the documents of the Japanese Government-General Museum of Korea, which are the collections of the National Museum of Korea, into machine-readable XML-based data to implement a digital archive and suggest the proper strategies for its utilization. These documents are significant historical materials for understanding the management policies on Korea's cultural heritage and the archaeological survey projects during the Japanese colonial period. However, they are currently available in analog formats or non-machine-readable digital forms, thus limiting the chances of their usability. The researcher has selected specific documents as sample data and systematized their hierarchical framework and meta-data by compiling DTDs and XML electronic documents. This approach enhances searchability and analytical capabilities while exploring the ways of practical applications for individuals and institutions. Through the design of an XML-based multi-classification system, researchers can apply their own classification schemes for advanced data analysis and academic insights. Meanwhile, the public can create the contents using verified information on cultural heritage. Additionally, by designing connections for internal and external data integration, the related institutional collectors of the materials can maximize the value of digital archives through collaborations and data linkages with domestic and foreign research institutes. XML-based digital archives are expected to contribute to preserving cultural heritage and managing research resources while playing a crucial role in promoting both the academic value and public awareness by efficiently sharing and utilizing information on cultural heritage.
