ABSTRACT

This study aims to show that the auxiliary predicate ‘(-eo) chiuda’ has distinct characteristics that set it apart from other auxiliary verbs. Compared to ‘beorida,’ ‘chiuda’ cannot substitute for a verb phrase that includes its preceding predicate, nor can it appear as a subsequent auxiliary verb in an auxiliary verb sequence. Furthermore, although the verb ‘meokda’ shares similar features with ‘chiuda,’ the range of verbs that can precede ‘chiuda’ is quite restricted. It cannot combine with synonyms of the main verb, nor with the verbs that have undergone semantic extension. Other auxiliary predicates of a similar type to ‘chiuda’ include ‘buchida,’ ‘teojida,’ and ‘deulda.’
