ABSTRACT

This paper aims to examine the use of recurring colors in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and their role in performing narrative functions. The paper is organized into four chapters. The first chapter presents a table outlining the colors associated with Victor, Elizabeth, and the Creature, the film’s main characters, thereby establishing a foundation for the analysis. The following three chapters analyze how these colors reappear throughout the film to convey the psychological states of the three characters and to illuminate their relationships, which in turn shape the development of the narrative. The final chapter synthesizes the preceding analyses to discuss the film’s narrative structure, thematic concerns, and emotional tone. Accordingly, this study demonstrates that color functions in film as a central element contributing to narrative meaning, rather than as a purely decorative device. In doing so, it responds to the relative lack of scholarly attention paid to color in del Toro’s films and emphasizes the value of color-centered approaches in understanding film narratives.
