ABSTRACT

This study aims to clarify the semantic properties of periphrastic causative constructions in Russian. Based on general definitions of causativity and causatives, this paper examines Russian causative constructions, with particular attention to periphrastic forms. It investigates the semantic characteristics of zastavliat’, a representative periphrastic causative verb in Russian, based on its semantic structure and government patterns. Furthermore, drawing on Lund (2002), the study analyzes the semantic roles and syntactic realization of the actants that constitute the verbal construction. Subsequently, noting that the delat’ construction is similar to the zastavliat’ construction when used in a two-subject and two-proposition structure, this paper compares the two verbs and examines the extent to which delat’ exhibits causative properties.
