AB - This study analyzes how the interaction between Chinese literature, publishing initiatives, and the market was manifested through series publication during the Second Sino-Japanese War, focusing on Shicong ( Poet ry S eries) within the Qiyue Congshu (July Series). Hu Feng sought to build a literary community sharing the zeitgeist of anti-Japanese resistance by reorganizing the literary network established around the magazine Qiyue (July) into a comprehensive series system. Shicong Vol. 1 functioned as an institutional platform that secured distribution channels through copyright pages, established a distinct literary brand via reciprocal advertising, and actively recruited nascent young writers. In particular, this series bodyized a subjective human ideal struggling amidst the ultimate limitations of war and the collapse of everyday life. Furthermore, it concretized Hu Feng's literary theory, which posited that the autonomy and specificity of literature could only be secured when historical truth is organically synthesized with the author's idiosyncratic and subjective attitude. Although the realist poetics of the July school-which emphasized the inner struggle of the creative subject and artistic autonomy-clashed with the “Talks at the Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art” and ultimately led to their demise in the 1955 Hu Feng Counter-Revolutionary Clique Incident, Shicong remains historically significant as a transitional cultural product and praxis that simultaneously sought to achieve artistic authenticity and political engagement amidst a chaotic era.
