ABSTRACT

'Hun-Dun(混沌)’ translates as Chaos. But chaos has no meaning of disorder in ancient Greek. Hesiod says that 'The very first of all Chaos came into being’ in Theogony. It is the first state of the universe which chaos clearly means ‘gaping void’ or 'chasm'. And ‘Hun-Dun(混沌)’ has no negative meaning in Philosophical Taoism. Lao-tzu asserted 'Hun(混)' of Tao as the origin of this university. Also 'Hun(混)' describes inseparable distinctiveness of shapelessness. Moreover, it is the first time that Chuang-tzu expressed a concept of 'Hun-Dun(混沌)’. And a concept of 'Hun-Dun(混沌)’ in Chuang-tzu is one and the same meaning as a concept of 'Hun(混)' in Lao-tzu. Therefore, both have a lot of positive meanings in their philosophy. The other side, they suggests a concept of 'Hun-Luan(昏亂)‘ that has no negative meaning as disorder. In these points, 'Hun-Dun(混沌)’ and 'Hun-Luan(昏亂)‘ have entirely a different meaning.
