ABSTRACT

This study investigates the relationship between Internet memes and cybertultures. Internet memes refer to cultural symbols or social ideas disseminated in cyberspace whereas traditional memes coined by Dawkins designate cultural genes dispersed among people. Internet memes are diffused via social network service(SNS) or messaging services in the form of image, video, hash tag, or emoticons. Both the characteristics of cyberculture such as anonymity, diversity, and connectivity and the cyberspace as a media influence the diffusion of Internet memes. Humor, joke, satire, fear, and the grotesque appear, as internet memes, in cyberspace where attention economy dominates. Internet memes are a type of collective action of the masses which respond to social reality such as youth unemployment, hate culture, disasters, political corruption, and authoritarianism. In sum, Internet memes are attention seeking collective actions in cyberspace. The Internet media both facilitate and limit the potentials of Internet memes as a participatory culture. The culture of cyberspace will contribute to the development of the creative component of Internet memes which is more important than in traditional memes.
