AB - Since 20th century, especially after 1980s and 90s, the development of the ideas of standard becomes an epitome of the history of Chinese grammar studies. It not only reflects the great influence of the ideas of the Western grammar upon Chinese grammar studies, but also indicates the efforts made by Chinese grammarians in order to seek a system of grammatical theory that suits Chinese language. In this paper we will try to pursue a clear understanding of the history of Chinese grammar by examining the history of the ideas of standard. This inquiry is meant to contribute to the systematic, theoretical treatments of Chinese grammar studies, since there have not been proper surveys and reviews concerning the idea of standard in Chinese language.
