ABSTRACT

Film aesthetics is mainly consisted of a form and a style. It is fundamentally important factors that they should interact each other in narrative. However, there is an example which a style is dominated by a form without interacting between them. As a result, this discord leads to a conventional film. Typical example is that shot/reverse shot is utilized obligatorily, I have a negative perspective for this, in situations when characters have conversations in the scenes. It seems that shot/reverse shot in those cases is being merely a device for narrative. I suggest that the style and the form should be interacted each other in shot/reverse shot by directing. This thesis will discuss the potentials of over the shoulder shot by practical examples of the film. Director Hirokazu Koreeda managed a remarkable(Deformed) over the shoulder shot, is one of the shot/reverse shot, in a film <Our Little Sister, 2015>. The Deformed over the shoulder shot(Angle where people face each other, Camera position and direction) of Director Koreeda’s leads the balanced film aesthetics. Furthermore, expressions of communication and rupture for characters during the narrative are accurate, and the main theme is highlighted by remarkable over the shoulder shot in this film.
