ABSTRACT

Agreeing with Antoine Berman’s idea that a bad translation disclaims the foreignness of the text, Lawrence Venuti contends that the real function of translation is to demystify the foreignness of the foreign text in its own language. He opposes to the concept of assimilation that translating a text is to inscribe a foreign text with domestic intelligibilities and interests. The purpose of this paper is largely twofold: one is to speculate on what a good translation is, based on Venuti’s minoritizing, or, widely known, foreignizing, translation strategies; the other is to see how to apply Venuti’s minoritizing strategies to some of real-life translations. Lastly this paper considers if the strategies of the minoritizing translation might be helpful to the future of Korean literature which is trying to open doors to the global communities that one would think are unreachable.
