A Study on the Criticism of Hetu-Luosh(河圖洛書) Theory in Huang Zong-xi's Yixuexiangxhulun

ABSTRACT

Huang Zong-xi has summarized his lifelong academic point of view as theory of innate goodness and a new perspective on Hetu(河圖)-Luoshu(洛書). This paper is a study of a new view of his Hetu-LuoshuLon(河圖洛書論) among them. His new point of view is that ‘Hetu’ and ‘Luosh’ are ancient maps or sculptures. This view is presented in his Sixth Episode of Yixuexiangxhulun, Vol. 1, which is a study of it. Huang Zongxi is one of the most important scholars of Yijing in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. Yixuexiangxhulun is his very important book of Yijing learning. Yixuexiangxhulun consists of 3 inner volumes and 3 outer volumes. The inner volume mainly discusses the ‘xiang(象)’ and the outer volume mainly discusses ‘shu(數)’. This book is a criticism of scholar’s Hetu-LuoshuCongenitalology(河洛先天學) of the Song Dynasty, especially from the viewpoint of the unification of Li and Ki and monism of Ki, and the criticism of ‘Hetu’ and ‘Luosh’ is the basis of the book. Huang Zongxi‘s principle of pragmatics was to interpret the Qing(經) as a sentence of scriptures(經傳). His critique of Xiang-shu Yijing learning is consistent with this principle, and therefore has limitations that are limited to critical criticism. But his criticism does not mean anything. This is because his Yixuexiangxhulun is the result of recovering all the mystical interpretations surrounding Hetu-Luoshu and returning them to the original Yijing learning. It can be said that Huang Zongxi's ultimate goal of criticizing constant ‘xiang’ and ‘shu’ learning was to return the main character to the use of human daily life. It was his purpose to criticize Hetu and Luoshu to eliminate all kinds of mystical and metaphysical interpretations developed around Hetu and Luoshu. This paper aims to examine the characteristics of Huang Zongxi Yijing learning through a brief analysis.
