ABSTRACT

Lee In-Jae and Jo Geung-Seob, who were Confucians of Yeongnam, reflectively contemplated the social situation of Joseon, and studied western civilization in order to look for reasons why Japan had become so strong after accepting western civilization. Regarding that the western political and social system was based on philosophies and ideas, they concentrated their concerns on that. I studied how they assessed western philosophies, ideas, and what their identity was as Confucian scholars(道學者). Considering that their research attitude was somewhat out of the bounds of conventional worship of the powerful, I mainly analyzed [Treatise on Ancient Greek Philosophy(古代希臘哲學攷辨)] of Lee In-Jae, [Gon-eon(困言)] of Jo Geung-Seob for examining details of the contents. Lee In-jae mainly studied ancient greek philosophy. This is because ancient greek philosophy was thought to be the origin of western civilization. Jo Geung-Seob studied mainly Western modern thought such as social evolution theory. But there was a limit to the study because there was a lack of data. Nevertheless these studies had important implications. This is because despite being the most conservative Confucians of Yeongnam(嶺南) they studied the ‘barbarian’ of the ‘West’ not rejecting it. In conclusion their purpose was not to accept western civilization but to reconfirm the value of Confucianism.
