ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to discuss light epistemologically, the central concept of Western medieval Platonism. This discussion is the task of finding commonalities inherent in the origin of existence and the aspect of existence. It also deals with the manifestation of various beings in the phenomenal world and their origin. The contents of this article are as follows. The concept of light is the aspect of the Absolute revealing his own existence. The lux and the lumen can be explained by the logic of the source and the exposition. There is a clear difference between light and invisibility on the ontology. But epistemologically, there is something in common with each other. This means that existence provides the possibility of cognition of the source of existence. Therefore, light is the principle and basis of cognition. In the view of Anselmus and Bonaventura, the epistemological discussion of the light concept can be seen clearly. The conclusion of this article is as follows. The concept of light, which has been important in Western medieval thought, can be seen as a cognition principle. The light concept makes it possible to answer the fundamental perceptions that humans throw. This means that humans can see the source of their true form and can recognize the truth. There is such a possibility in the light concept of Anselmus and Bonaventura.
