AB - The main purpose of this article is to explain the meaning of the religious in the Derrida’s thought. Derrida makes the distinction relegere and religare in the definition of religion. The one means holiness, separation, and the other means union. It is important to understand not only the dimension of separation, but also the dimension of union of God and man. Derrida, in the lecture of Fear and Trembling, asserts that the religious subject determined by the pious interpretation of Kierkegaard on Abraham could acquire the status of ethical subjectivity by responding to the infinite demand of the wholly other. But in order to respond to this demand addressed to the subject, he has to interrupt all relationship to other persons and to concentrate on the absolutely other. In regard with the other in the correlation of call and response, Derrida defines its absolute alterity as being beyond the knowledge and the power of subject. The problem here is how to define the other freed from knowledge. Some scholars, thus, characterize Derrida's alterity as negative theology. However, Derrida believes that the non-knowledge and indeterminacy of an absolutely other can not only be interpreted as a personal being like God , but as a Khora, an absolute meaningless existence. Through this concept of Khora, Derrida seeks to distance himself from the theological and anthropological traditions of understanding the other. We want to explain his concept of alterity through this trajectory of Derrida's thought.
