AB - The world is not peaceful, even though everyone desires for peace. The world has never been peaceful, even though the whole world wants peace. The peaceful world we know seems to be a story or fairy tales that appears in myths.
This paper began with the questions : “Why isn't the world peaceful? Why can't we make a peaceful world? How can we build a peaceful world?” So far, we have only talked about one peace rather than about the diverse peaces that come from various experiences and perceptions in defining peace. In addition, violence has been exercised under the guise of peace, thinking that only self-centered peace is true peace. Even from now on, we should find a point of contact among diverse peaces and pursue true peace through harmony among peaces.
Jeungsan was a thinker who was active in the late Joseon Dynasty and advocated peace while observing the turbulent Joseon society. The core of Jeungsan’s peace idea lies in Sangsaeng ethics. Sangsaeng is what makes others good. And the idea of harmonious creation(調化) is inherent in Sangsaeng ethics. Harmonious creation has a meaning of harmony and being reborn as a new being. The harmonious creation, which implies a sympathetic understanding, consideration, and respect for each other, clearly reveals what Sangsaeng ethics is aiming for.
Jeungsan emphasized the practice of Sangsaeng ethics to overcome the world full of conflicts and confrontations and to build a peaceful world. He emphasized the direct practice of Sangsaeng ethics based on self-reflection by offering five teachings: Do not deceive your heart-mind, will practice virtuous speech, will not provoke Cheok(the emotional grievances or grudges that others hold against you) from others, will not disregard the beneficence bestowed upon you, and will promote the betterment of others.
