ABSTRACT

Science, which has developed along with the long history of mankind, has entered our lives and has permeated our culture. Newton’s theory of gravity also provided us with a mechanistic worldview, and has had its influence from the 17th century to the present in terms of civilization and cultural history. However, quantum theory, relativity, and thermodynamics shake the solidity of Newton’s laws of nature. In particular, Prigogine not only criticized Newton’s classical dynamics with the theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, but ultimately insisted on a new evolutionary science paradigm. The purpose of this study is to philosophically analyze whether Prigogine’s theory is applicable to the study of Confucian culture. To this end, I focused on the concepts of the dissipative structures, self-organization, and irreversibility of time, and examined the connection between these concepts and the Confucian culture, and revealed the limitations of Prigogine’s theory of time.
